- Utah Valley returns home to continue WAC play on Saturday afternoon against in-state foe Utah Tech. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. MT at the UCCU Center in Orem, Utah. OLD HAMMER RIVALRY
The Old Hammer rivalry between Utah Valley and Utah Tech dates back to their days as junior college powerhouses competing in the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC). For nearly 50 years, the two schools battled annually for the Region 18 title until UVU made the jump to NCAA Division I in 2003. In 2021, the rivalry was officially reignited and named the "Old Hammer Rivalry" to honor the shared history of the programs and their evolution from junior colleges to Division I schools.
The rivalry incorporates elements of both the past and the present, celebrating the schools' shared roots in technical education and their commitment to athletic excellence. The competition spans multiple sports. The hammer symbolizes the rich tradition and hard work that have defined the rivalry for decades.
SERIES HISTORY VS. THE TRAILBLAZERS
Utah Valley and Utah Tech will meet for the ninth time as NCAA Division I programs. Utah Valley holds a 5-3 all-time series lead, including a dominant 84-71 victory in the last meeting on Jan. 20, 2024 at the UCCU Center. Utah Valley also split last season's series, dropping a 65-53 decision in St. George before securing the 84-71 win at the UCCU Center. The Wolverines boast a 4-1 all-time record against the Trailblazers in Orem, with Utah Tech's lone win at the UCCU Center coming in a 93-89 overtime thriller on Feb. 13, 2021. These two programs share a deep history, having first played during the 1972-73 season and meeting regularly in the Scenic West Athletic Conference/NJCAA Region 18 until Utah Valley transitioned to NCAA Division I in 2003-04.
