OREM—Utah Valley's Tanner Toolson and Dominick Nelson have been named the Jersey Mike's A Sub Above WAC Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week, respectively, after leading the Wolverines to a perfect 2-0 record last week and extending their win streak to eight games—now tied for the nation's seventh longest win streak.
Toolson, a sophomore guard, averaged 20.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.5 steals per game while shooting an impressive 56.5% from the field and 50.0% from three-point range. He scored a team-high 22 points in UVU's thrilling 85-83 overtime road win at UT Arlington, hitting 7-of-12 from the field and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Toolson followed that with 18 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals in the Wolverines' dominant 96-80 Old Hammer Rivalry victory over Utah Tech. His consistent performances have been a driving force in Utah Valley's unbeaten 5-0 start in WAC play.
Nelson, a junior guard and first-year Wolverine, also averaged 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game across the two wins. He poured in a career-high 25 points in the overtime win at UT Arlington, going 13-of-16 from the free-throw line while adding four rebounds and five assists. Nelson followed that effort with 15 points, four rebounds, and an assist in the win over Utah Tech.
Now 13-6 overall and a perfect 5-0 in WAC play, Utah Valley has won eight straight games, tied for the nation's seventh longest win streak. The Wolverines now hit the road for three consecutive WAC matchups, beginning with a game at California Baptist on Thursday night in Riverside. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. MT.
