Second half run helps Wolverines win third straight

OREM, Utah — Tahlia White scored 17 points, and Halle Nelson had a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds as Utah Valley University used a late third-quarter run en route to a 59-50 win over California Baptist University on Thursday night in the UCCU Center.

The Wolverines (12-6, 4-2) closed the third quarter on a 15-0 run and extended it to 17 straight to start the fourth, flipping a 10-point deficit into a 43-36 lead early in the fourth as they notched their third straight win.

Ally Criddle finished with 10 points, six rebounds, and six assists while Amanda Barcello finished with seven points as she and Cambree Blackham had three steals apiece. Barcello also collected two blocks while Danja Stafford Collins had six points and eight rebounds in limited time as she's battled illness all week.

Both teams struggled to get the ball to drop in the first half, shooting just 8-for-29 (27.6%) each in the game's first 20 minutes. UVU led 7-2 midway through the first before the Lancers (6-13, 3-2) finished the first quarter on a 9-0 run to lead 11-7 after Sydney White hit a three in the closing seconds.

The Wolverines trailed by three with 4:12 left in the second when CBU again closed the quarter well, finishing the half on a 7-2 spurt to take a 28-20 lead into the break.

In the third, UVU trailed 36-26 before beginning the pivotal run. California Baptist missed eight straight attempts to end the quarter while five different players scored for the Wolverines during the run. White hit a 3-pointer to start the run, and Amanda Barcello later tied the game with a triple with 1:26 left. Blackham followed with a go-ahead 3-pointer before Saige Gibb got a layup on a feed from Criddle to give UVU the lead after three, 41-36.

Nhug Bosch Duran hit a pair of 3-pointers for the Lancers to get back within two on two different occasions, the second coming with 4:14 to go that made it a 48-46 game. Barcello would answer with a pair from the line before consecutive buckets by White to stretch it back to eight, 54-46, with two minutes to go. UVU then made 5-of-6 from the line in the final 37 seconds to keep CBU at bay and secure the win.

UVU upped its shooting percentage in the second half after making 8-of-15 (53.3%) in the third quarter. The Wolverines finished 20-for-62 overall (32.3%), while CBU shot 26.8% (15-for-56) for the game. After going 0-for-7 in the first half from three, Utah Valley was 4-for-7 from distance in the second half.

The Wolverines now host Seattle University on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the UCCU Center. The Redhawks dropped a 70-58 home game to UT Arlington on Thursday night.
