Utah Valley wraps home season with visit from San Diego State

10/24/2025 12:05:00 PM

Utah Valley closes out the 2025 home season on Monday night, hosting the defending WAC regular season champion San Diego State Aztecs for the final game of the inaugural campaign at UCCU Stadium.

Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. MDT, and will be the second half of a doubleheader with the women's soccer team, who will play Utah Tech at 5. Tickets will be honored for both games, and can be purchased at GoUVU.com/MSOCtix.

Monday's match will be streamed live on ESPN+, with live stats available at GoUVU.com/stats. Fans watching from abroad can also tune in at WACInternational.tv.

LAST TIME OUT
The Wolverines played to a 3-3 tie at UNLV on Thursday in Las Vegas. The Rebels rallied back from a 3-0 deficit to earn a point and take their WAC-leading fourth draw.

Abdou Samb scored the opener for Utah Valley, his first of the season and first at the D-I level. Samb's goal makes him the 13th different player to score a goal this season, matching the program record set in 2022.

Nil Grau and Isaac Emojong each scored their fifth goals of the season at UNLV. Grau and Emojong are the first Wolverine duo to each have at least five goals in a season since Aaron Nixon (8) and Jojea Kwizera (5) during the fall 2021 season. Grau's goal was just the 4th unassisted open-play goal this season for UVU.

Utah Valley's offense continues to lead the WAC and rank among the best in the nation. The Wolverines rank 9th in the nation in scoring offense at 2.42 goals/game, and 15th in assists/game at 2.42.

Entering the weekend, Utah Valley is one of 37 teams nationally with two or fewer losses this season, With two more wins, the Wolverines would reach double-digit wins for the first time under Kyle Beckerman, the first time since 2019, and just the fourth time in program history.

HOME FINALE DRAMA
In each of the last three seasons, Utah Valley's home finale has featured some of the most exciting finishes you'll ever see on a soccer pitch. Last year, the Wolverines secured the latest match-winner in program history to beat Utah Tech, scoring with just 19 seconds left to claim the Old Hammer Rivalry. In 2023, UVU went blow for blow with GCU to take a 2-2 draw to qualify for the WAC Tournament and eliminate the Lopes in the process. In 2022, UVU scored two late goals — including what was previously the latest match-winner in program history at the 87:35 mark — to beat CBU 2-1.

(POINT) SIX SEVEN
As of Oct. 24, Keegan Oyler ranks 7th in the nation in assists per game at 0.67. The redshirt junior also ranks 6th in the nation in total assists with 8, the 4th-most in a single season in program history.

NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION
At least one of Utah Valley's two Spaniards — Nil Grau and Jose Luis Martin Montealegre — have registered a point in each of the Wolverines' last eight matches, dating back to Martin Montealegre's return to the lineup against Sac State on Sept. 4. In that span, Grau has 4 goals and 1 assist, while Martin Montealegre has 2 goals and 4 assists.

SCOUTING THE AZTECS
The reigning WAC regular season champions haven't been able to entirely replicate their success from their inaugural campaign in the league, but are still in contention for the conference crown with two games to go, sitting two points back of first place CBU. SDSU is led by Christian Engmann (4G/2A) and Juan Zepeda (4G/1A). A win on Monday against UVU could set up a winner-take-all game on the final match day of the season in San Diego, with the Aztecs hosting league-leader CBU on Saturday.

SERIES HISTORY VS SDSU
Utah Valley and SDSU meet for the first time as conference foes and second time overall. UVU won the one previous meeting, 1-0 in 2017 when SDSU was still in the PAC-12. Last season's game was canceled after a brush fire and police situation on the SDSU campus, and the two sides couldn't agree on a reschedule time and date. SDSU HC Ryan Hopkins faced UVU twice when he was an assistant at Denver in 2014-15, with the home team winning each match.

UP NEXT
Utah Valley will close out the regular season on Friday with the Old Hammer Rivalry against Utah Tech in St. George. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. MDT, and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
