RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Utah Valley's season came to a close on Sunday night, as the Wolverines fell 1-0 to the Grand Canyon Lopes in the WAC Tournament Quarterfinals.
The two sides were evenly matched all game long, but a misplayed ball gave GCU a corner kick that scored the lone goal of the match. Utah Valley and Grand Canyon each had three shots on goal, with the Lopes holding a slim 15-12 advantage in total shots.
The Wolverines gave GCU plenty of extra chances in the first 45, but the Lopes weren't able to turn any of them into shots on frame. Utah Valley had the first shot on goal in the 27th minute, but Jose Luis Martin Montealegre's header was turned aside.
GCU had a dangerous set piece in the 39th minute, with WAC Offensive Player of the Year Junior Diouf going for goal a long way out, but his shot was blocked by the wall and corralled by Kolby Sessions.
Martin Montealegre had the best scoring chance of the night in the 43rd, weaving his way into the Lopes' box, but his shot from a tough angle was saved.
The Lopes scored the game-winner just three minutes into the second half. After the GCU high press forced a corner, the Lopes were able to convert off the foot of Alan Hermitte.
Isaac Emojong had a shot in the 63rd minute, but his effort went right at the keeper. That would be the last on-target shot the Wolverines would get.
The loss ends what proved to be a historic season for Utah Valley, with the team achieving its highest national ranking since 2017 and breaking numerous records. Among those are the most consecutive shutouts in WAC history and the best scoring offense in team history at 2.07 goals per game.
