BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Six Utah Valley University wrestlers placed at Sunday's Roadrunner Open at CSU Bakersfield, led by Levi Kovacs' runner-up finish at 285 pounds. Kovacs was unbeaten on the mat and won his semifinal match before the travel schedule forced a handful of Wolverines to exit the tournament early.

Mark Takara, one of two starters from Thursday's win in the Big 12 opener at California Baptist to enter Sunday's open, placed fourth at 157. Takara collected four wins, while Alex Emmer also picked up four victories. In a matchup between the two teammates, Takara scored a 7-2 decision and finished fourth. Emmer, who took fifth, also faced another Wolverine, Tanner Frothinger, and beat him in a 6-5 contest.

Kovacs reached the final with a trio of decisions. He opened with a 5-4 victory over Embry-Riddle's Kenneth Copley before another one-point win against Air Force's Antonio Ramos. In the semifinal, Kovacs led 1-0 when he rode California Baptist's Hunter Vander Heiden for the entirety of the third period to earn a 2-0 win and advance to the final.

Three Utah Valley wrestlers took sixth: Ryker Fullmer at 165, Christian Smoot at 184, and Smokey McClure — who was competing unattached — at 141. McClure was one of five Wolverines to enter the open unattached or through the Brunson Utah Valley Regional Training Center. He advanced to the semifinals before suffering his first loss in overtime to Cal Poly's Aiden Simmons. McClure reached that point with two wins, including an 8-5 decision over Air Force's Brenden Barnes.

Fullmer's three-win day included a pair of falls, one of which came against Cal Poly's Luke Gayer. It marked just his second appearance of the season after making his debut Thursday at CBU. Smoot also pinned opponents in two of his three victories, including the fastest by a UVU wrestler this season when he defeated Menlo's Mathias Collins just 1:29 into the match.

Other Wolverines to compete unattached included Jake Castagneto and Frothinger, each of whom collected three wins. Castagneto's day included a 7-1 victory over Cal Poly's Caleb Rivas, while Frothinger — competing under Brunson UVRTC — earned a 15-6 major decision over Oregon State's Koy Davidson. Christian Slack notched two wins, including a fall in 2:45 over CSU Bakersfield's Angel Cervantes.

Utah Valley will next return to the mat at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 5-6.
