TEMPE, Ariz. — Tatum Hall went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Rachael Brown went 1-for-3 with one RBI as Utah Valley fell 4-3 in a heartbreaker to the Arizona State Sun Devils on Sunday in Tempe.
The Wolverines led 3-0 heading into the sixth inning, but back-to-back homers gave the Sun Devils all the offense they needed.
Avery Sapp put up a strong performance in the circle, scattering two hits through the first five frames, but took the tough-luck loss.
ASU threatened in the first courtesy of a leadoff triple by former Utah Tech star Tanya Windle, but Sapp was able to hunker down and strand her there with a strikeout and a caught stealing on a double steal play.
The Wolverines looked to have opened the scoring in the second when Amber Rodriguez's double drove in Megan Gibbs, but the umpires ruled Gibbs left first early.
After returning to the plate, Rodriguez singled to kickstart a three-run rally. Two more singles by Peyton Hall and Rachael Brown brought in the first run, then after Victoria Vasquez was hit by a pitch, Tatum Hall drove in two more with a single to left.
The Sun Devils had another scoring opportunity in the third, but the Wolverine defense came up with a play again to snuff it out. ASU's Grace Molitor led off the inning with a walk, then advanced to third by stealing second and advancing on a groundout. Victoria Vasquez then cut her down at home on a groundout to second.
After trading zeros for four and a half innings, ASU took the lead on back-to-back homers in the sixth, one to tie the game and one to take the lead for good.
