Grady’s Career Night Lifts Utah Valley to 61-55 Homecoming Win Over Seattle U

OREM — Osiris Grady scored a career-high 17 points to lead Utah Valley to a 61-55 win over Seattle U on Homecoming Saturday at the UCCU Center.

Utah Valley now stands at 20-7 overall and remains alone atop the WAC at 12-1. This win marks the third time in the past four seasons that the Wolverines have reached the 20-win mark.

With the score tied at 52-55, Dominick Nelson knocked down a three-pointer from the corner to level the game with 2:46 remaining. UVU then took a 56-55 lead. Tanner Toolson secured a crucial offensive rebound, and the Wolverines converted 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Grady's career night came on 4-of-5 shooting from the field, including a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, and he was flawless at the free throw line, going 6-of-6. He also contributed four rebounds and a block.

"Osiris had one of those games where it felt great, and he's playing great," UVU head coach Todd Phillips said. "The best thing and hardest thing about Osiris is he's really hard on himself. Hopefully, he won't be too mad about the one shot he missed tonight. He brings so much energy and effort for us."

Toolson added 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while Carter Welling nearly recorded a double-double with 11 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. Nelson also reached double figures with 10 points and five rebounds.

Utah Valley shot 35.4% (17-of-48) from the field, including 36.4% (8-of-22) from three-point range. Seattle U managed 33.3% (18-of-54) from the floor and 29.2% (7-of-24) from long range. UVU outrebounded the Redhawks 41-34 but was outscored 22-16 in the paint, and 11 turnovers by Utah Valley resulted in 17 points for Seattle U.

Utah Valley will continue WAC play at home against in-state rival Southern Utah on Saturday, Feb. 22. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at the UCCU Center, marking the final home game of the season for the Wolverines.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
Seattle U jumped to an early 10-5 lead in the opening four minutes before Utah Valley responded with a 13-3 run over the next eight minutes, taking an 18-13 advantage with 8:04 remaining. The Redhawks then surged, outscoring the Wolverines 15-4 over the following 6:31 to grab a 28-22 lead with just 1:34 left, but UVU closed the half by outscoring Seattle 4-2 in the final minute to trim the deficit to 30-26.

"It was just a defensive battle between two of the best defensive teams in the league," Phillips said. "Sometimes it feels ugly, but that's what you get this time of year when teams are preparing for the WAC tournament. Everything ramps up, the intensity ramps up."

Second Half: Utah Valley began the second half on a hot streak, with Grady knocking down two three-pointers that sparked a 10-5 run to take a 36-35 lead. Seattle responded with a 9-1 burst over 3:48, pushing its advantage to 44-37 with 13:30 remaining. An 8-3 run, triggered by Ethan Potter's timely three, brought the Wolverines within two at 47-45 with 8:18 left. The Redhawks then extended their lead by scoring five unanswered points to reach 52-45 with 6:54 remaining.

In the final push, Grady's two free throws and Toolson's three-pointer ignited an 11-3 run, giving UVU a 56-55 lead with 2:06 left. Although Nelson missed a three with 30 seconds remaining, Toolson's offensive rebound and subsequent free throw performance secured the win.

"Tanner had some huge plays down the stretch," Phillips said. "Other than that, he struggled all night. But he guarded, so he's hard not to have in the game. He's been known for getting some big rebounds late in games, and I'm really proud of him tonight."

Grady credited the team's resilience in closing out the game despite trailing for much of the second half.

"We just said every play, we've got to get a stop," Grady said. "We can't keep letting them score. Once we started getting 2-3 stops in a row and coming back and scoring, it helped a lot."
