FRESNO, Calif. – Behind a steady final-round even-par 71,
Dane Huddleston led the Utah Valley men's golf team with a tie for 14th place at the Nick Watney Invitational, finishing with a three-round score of 3-under-par 210 (71-68-71) at Sunnyside Country Club.
As a team, Utah Valley posted a final-round 2-over-par 286 to secure ninth place in the 13-team field, finishing with a three-round total of 9-over-par 861 (284-291-286).
Huddleston's final-round performance included five birdies and 10 pars, marking his fifth consecutive top-15 finish. He entered the tournament on the heels of three straight victories. Huddleston finished just seven shots behind individual medalist Carlos Astiazaran of Pacific, who claimed the title with a 10-under-par 203 (66-67-70).
Ryan Seamons matched Huddleston with an even-par 71 in the final round, climbing 10 spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for 33rd at 4-over-par 217 (73-73-71). Seamons tallied three birdies on the front nine in his closing round.
Playing as an individual,
Paxton Maxwell also tied for 33rd after carding a final-round 1-over-par 72, finishing at 4-over-par 217 (73-72-72). Maxwell recorded two birdies on the back nine.
Clement Lepine registered a final-round 1-over-par 72 to place in a tie for 38th with a three-round total of 5-over-par 218 (72-74-72), picking up three birdies along the way.
Zachary Erskine, who opened the tournament with an impressive 68, closed with an 8-over-par 79 to finish tied for 53rd at 10-over-par 223 (68-76-79).
Andrew Hawk rounded out UVU's lineup with a final-round 1-over-par 72, finishing in a tie for 69th at 16-over-par 229 (80-77-72).
Fresno State and San Diego shared the team championship, each finishing at 23-under-par 829.
"We didn't have our best stuff this week," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Curran. "Short game rust really hurt us. Luckily, we've got a few days off to prepare for our next event."
Utah Valley will return to action at the Bandon Dunes Championship, set for March 9-11 at Bandon Dunes Golf Club in Bandon, Oregon.
