OREM, Utah — Utah Valley dropped its final non-conference contest of the regular season on Tuesday, falling to the Big Sky-leading Idaho State Bengals, 6-0 at Wolverine Softball Field.
ISU's Megan Meracle held the Wolverine hitters off-balance all afternoon, scattering three hits and three walks in an efficient 92-pitch complete game. Britney Moreno recorded her team-leading 43rd hit of the season and Emma Haygood and Avery Sapp each picked up singles in the defeat.
Cam Davis got the start and held the Bengals scoreless through the first two frames, but a leadoff double and a throwing error on a sac bunt caused things to unravel in the third. Two more doubles and a single allowed ISU to plate four runs in the inning and pull away.
The Wolverines had their best scoring opportunity in the fifth when Sapp singled and Payge Armendariz drew a walk to lead off the inning, but Meracle was able to get the next three batters in quick succession on a total of seven pitches.
ISU got a run in the sixth on a double steal play with runners on the corners, then tacked on another in the seventh via a solo homer by Ava Brown.
The Wolverines will have a week off before returning to the diamond in the Emerald City on April 25, as Utah Valley makes its final trip to Seattle to face the Seattle U Redhawks for the final time as conference rivals. First pitch of the Friday doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m. MDT, and all the action will be streamed live on ESPN+.
