OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University's distance squad is headed to the Bay Area this week while the rest of the roster will be in Las Vegas for the UNLV Rebel ELITE as the outdoor track & field season continues. The distance runners will have competitors at the Stanford Invitational and the Mike Fanelli Track Classic at San Francisco State.
The Mike Fanelli, formerly the SF State Distance Carnival, gets underway on Thursday with
Andrew Blackham,
Alex Hartshorn, and
Wyatt Mortenson competing in the 10k in the afternoon.
On Friday, Utah Valley has nine runners set to race at Stanford, including
Oakley Olson in the steeplechase and
Mo Guled in the 10k. The late night will conclude with
Natalia Boltz,
Anna Martin, and
Ari Trimble in the women's 10k. At San Francisco State, UVU will have 10 runners competing in the 5k, steeplechase, and 1500. The Mike Fanelli concludes on Saturday with six entries in the 800.
In Las Vegas, action will begin with a small schedule on Friday with the hammer, shot put, and long jump. Saturday opens at 9 a.m. PT with the women's pole vault, with freshman and school-record holder
Jocelyn Phillips competing. The races get underway at 11 a.m. PT with the 4x100 relays and finishing with the 4x400 relays starting at 5:20 p.m.
Entering this week, Utah Valley leads the WAC performance list in 13 events, with
Quincy Bonds posting the best 200-meter and 100-meter hurdle times in the conference so far this season. The Wolverines also have the top marks in the league in the women's javelin (
Kelsi Oldroyd), women's hammer (
Elyssa Shaw), women's shot put (
Karsten Deakin), and men's discus (
Trevor Hill).
Aiden Garnett has the top mark in the men's high jump, Olson and
Abdulsalam Farah have the top 3,000-meter steeplechase times,
Ella Hopper leads in the 400-meter hurdles, and
Cameron Franklin is atop the men's 400-meter leaderboard. UVU also has the top 4x100 times for both the men and women.
Next week, Utah Valley will compete at the Weber State and Utah Spring Classic on Friday, April 11, and Saturday, April 12. The Wolverines are also expected to send competitors to the Bryan Clay Multis, which begins on Thursday, April 10.
