OGDEN, Utah — Rachael Brown went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Payge Armendariz reached in both her plate appearances, including a double, but Utah Valley's late-inning rally fell short as the Weber State Wildcats topped the Wolverines 4-2 in Ogden on Tuesday afternoon.
Utah Valley got within one with a pair of runs in the sixth, but the Wildcats were able to get an insurance run and shut the door in the seventh.
Cam Davis got the start in the circle and allowed three ER over 3.1 IP. Lily Riley pitched the remaining 2.2 innings, surrendering one ER on three hits in another strong bullpen outing.
The Wolverines loaded the bases in the third, but were unable to capitalize. Brown and Britney Moreno each singled and Megan Gibbs walked, but the Wildcats got a pair of groundouts to get out of the jam.
Weber State capitalized on its scoring chance in the home half of the third, plating a pair of runs. The second came in on a strange play with runners on second and third. WSU's Mariyah Delgado hit a ball deep in the hole at short to Moreno, who threw to Peyton Hall at third to get the runner coming from second. After some deliberation by the umpires, they ruled the runner from third touched home before the tag was applied by Hall.
The Wildcats got another run in the fourth on an RBI triple by Taegen Smith.
Utah Valley got back within one with a pair of runs in the sixth. Emma Haygood singled and Armendariz walked. Haygood's pinch runner Kina Watts tagged up on a flyout to center, then came in to score on a groundout by Victoria Vasquez. Brown then roped a single to center to score Armendariz's pinch runner Amber Rodriguez.
The Wildcats got an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI double to make it 4-2, but the Wolverines were retired in order in the seventh.
Utah Valley returns to WAC play with its first-ever road series at Tarleton State starting on Friday. Friday's doubleheader is slated to begin at 3 p.m. MDT, and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
