Remy, Hartshorn, and Houle earn WAC Outdoor major awards

5/27/2025 2:42:00 PM

ARLINGTON, Texas — Utah Valley University's Gabe Remy was named the WAC Men's Track Athlete of the Year, while Alex Hartshorn was named the WAC Freshman of the Year, and Coach Scott Houle was named both the men's and women's Coach of the Year, following a vote by the league's coaches.

Houle's honors push him over 40 conference coach of the year honors during his 21-year coaching career at Utah Valley. The Coach of the Year honors mark the 41st and 42nd time in his career that he's received a conference Coach of the Year award following the 42nd conference title he's coached his squad to. 17 of those championships and honors have come as members of the WAC, with the third time he's earned the men's outdoor award and the second straight year he's won the women's award. Houle helped lead UVU's women to the WAC Triple Crown this season, winning the cross country, indoor, and outdoor team championships.

Remy, who won the 100, 200-and was on the 4x100-winning squad at the WAC Outdoor Championships in Arlington, Texas, will compete in all three events this week at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in College Station, Texas. Remy was named the WAC Men's Most Outstanding Athlete following the outdoor meet. He also set the school record in both the 100 and 200, and sits ninth and eighth in the West, respectively, in the two events.

Hartshorn's honor comes after he was also named the WAC Indoor Freshman of the Year. Hartshorn was fourth in the 1500-meter run at the WAC Outdoor Championships, posting a time of 3:48.65 during prelim heats to qualify for the NCAA West first round meet. Hartshorn added a finals appearance in the 800-meter run (2:00.93) at the conference outdoor meet.

Also winning awards on the women's side were Tarleton State's Victoria Cameron and Prestina Ochonogor. Cameron was named the women's athlete of the year while Ochonogor was the freshman of the year.
