RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Avery Sapp drove in two for the second straight game, but a six-run third inning by the Seattle U Redhawks spelled doom as Utah Valley fell 10-3 at the WAC Tournament.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Redhawks plated 10 unanswered runs, including a six-run third inning, to take the lead and pull away.
Utah Valley drops down to the loser's bracket, where it will await the loser of tomorrow morning's California Baptist-Tarleton State game.
The first three batters reached to start the game for the Wolverines, as Britney Moreno and Amber Rodriguez singled, followed by a Peyton Hall walk. After Moreno was cut down at home on a fielder's choice by Mann, Payge Armendariz drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the first run. Sapp followed that up with a two-run single to left center.
Rodriguez made an impressive play to start the bottom of the second, turning a sharply-hit one-hop liner into a 9-3 putout at first. The Redhawks were able to put together a two-out rally, however, plating their first two runs of the game to get within one at 3-2.
Seattle U put up an offensive onslaught in the third, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring six runs to take the lead for good. The Redhawks tacked on another run in the fifth and one in the sixth for the final runs of the game.
The Wolverines will look to extend their season tomorrow afternoon at 5 p.m. MDT against the loser of the California Baptist/Tarleton State game, which will begin at 11 a.m. MDT. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+, with live stats at UVUStats.com.
