PROVO, Utah — No. 12 BYU scored goals in the 39th and 60th minutes to hand Utah Valley University a 2-0 setback on Friday night at South Field.
The loss snaps a two-match win streak for the Wolverines, who fall to 3-3-1 on the season. The Cougars improve to 5-1-1 overall.
BYU broke through in the 39th minute when a ball played into the box was headed on frame and saved, but the rebound fell to Ellie Walbruch, who slotted it home for a 1-0 lead. The Cougars doubled their advantage in the 60th minute on a goal from Afton Perry.
BYU outshot UVU 15-9 on the night, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. The Cougars also held a narrow 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Faith Webber,
Jacey Wood, and
Sadie Beardall paced the Wolverines with two shots apiece. Senior goalkeeper
Leah Wolf led UVU defensively with seven saves.
"We never gave ourselves a chance tonight," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. "Our energy was low and we didn't really compete. It didn't have anything to do with the environment—we were second to balls, and it looked like we were scared to play. You're never going to get a result against a good team when you don't even give yourself a shot."
The Wolverines had a few late chances, including a header from
Jacey Wood and a free kick from
Kate Shirts, but were unable to break through.
"Had that ball gone in, it would've been against the run of play," Lemay said. "Kate struck a good ball and it was put in a dangerous spot, but overall we weren't ourselves tonight. We didn't give ourselves a chance to win."
Utah Valley now turns its attention to a road matchup at Weber State on Monday, Sept. 15, in Ogden. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. MT with the game broadcast live on ESPN+.
