Utah Valley opens play Wednesday at the Outrigger Invitational against San Jose State

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley women's volleyball opens its second weekend of competition on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the Outrigger Invitational hosted by the University of Hawai'i. The trip marks the Wolverines' third to the Islands and their first since 2019. The tournament runs through Friday, Sept. 5, with matchups against San José State, St. John's and Hawai'i.

LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley opened the season 1-2, including a reverse sweep of Montana in the season opener last Friday at the UCCU Center. Avery Page earned all-tournament honors with 47 kills, averaging 3.36 kills per set over three matches. Natalie Riggs recorded 36 digs, 35 assists and 10 aces, including a career-high five aces against Boise State.
 
SCOUTING SAN JOSÉ STATE
San José State went 0-2 on opening weekend, falling twice to future Big West member UC Santa Barbara. The Spartans were picked to finish 11th in the Mountain West. Lolo Fonua led SJSU with 19 kills, averaging 3.17 kills per set.
 
SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
St. John's finished 2024 at 24-13, reaching the National Invitational Volleyball Championship semifinals before falling to Bowling Green. The Red Storm opened this season 0-3, with two losses to Power Four opponents Auburn and No. 4 Louisville. Erin Jones, Martina Ghezzi and Ana Franca Benjamin each average more than two kills per set. St. John's was picked fourth in the Big East and faces Utah Valley for the first time.
 
SCOUTING HAWAII
Hawai'i opened 0-3 against Marquette, Utah State and San Diego but was picked to win the Big West. Bri Gunderson, a transfer from BYU via Eastern Washington, made the preseason watchlist. Cha'lei Reid leads with 29 kills and 40 points, while libero Victoria Leyva averages 3.55 digs per set.
 
WOLVERINE MILESTONES
The Wolverines saw multiple student-athletes reach milestones this past weekend at the Utah Valley Invitational. Page moved up to No. 5 in career kills, Riggs earned her 100th career service ace and finished the weekend with 109, tying Camie Manwill for eighth all time in program history. Lani Matavao passed Nakisha Willden to move into 10th place all time in digs and enters this weekend with 892.
 
UP NEXT
Utah Valley returns to the mainland Tuesday, Sept. 9, to face No. 21 Utah at the John M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City. The Wolverines then travel to the East Coast to play Duke and Coastal Carolina next weekend.
