OREM, Utah — Long Beach State defeated Utah Valley 3-2 (13-25, 23-25, 27-25, 27-25, 15-6) on Thursday night at Lockhart Arena. Sidney Hamaker led Long Beach State (13-4, 5-2 Big West) with 23 kills, while Madi Maxwell recorded 15 kills, 28 assists and 18 digs for her third triple-double of the season.

Utah Valley (4-15, 2-5 Big West) had four players finish with double-digit kills. Brielle Rueckert paced the Wolverines with 14 kills and seven blocks. Olivia Gloeckner added 13 kills, Miley Thunstrom finished with 12 and Alyvia Watkins contributed 10.

Evalyn Medaris totaled 44 assists, her highest total in Big West play this season, and added 15 digs and five blocks for a double-double. Libero Lani Toutai recorded 16 digs and six assists.

Utah Valley opened the match with a 7-3 run behind three kills and two blocks from Rueckert. After Long Beach State trimmed the deficit, the Idaho duo of Chloe Hansen and Kenna McClure helped spark another run. Hansen recorded a kill before McClure, playing on her birthday, delivered a service ace to help the Wolverines build an 11-5 lead and force a Long Beach State timeout.

The Wolverines produced one of their strongest offensive sets of conference play, hitting .400 while holding The Beach to a negative hitting percentage to claim the opening set.

The second set remained tight throughout. Long Beach State used a 3-0 run to break a 17-17 tie and take a 20-17 lead, but Utah Valley answered immediately. A kill from Thunstrom and a solo block by Rueckert cut the deficit to one. Rueckert later added another kill to make it 22-20 before she and Gloeckner combined for a block to bring UVU within a point.

Gloeckner's kill gave the Wolverines a 23-22 advantage and forced a Long Beach State timeout during a decisive 5-0 run. After The Beach fought off one set point, Rueckert ended the set with a kill through the middle to give Utah Valley a two-set lead.

The tightly contested match continued in the third set. Watkins recorded three consecutive kills to put the Wolverines ahead 16-15. Utah Valley extended the lead to 19-16 during a 3-0 run that included a Hansen kill and service ace. The ace was one of seven by the Wolverines, tying a season high for the team.

Long Beach State, however, fought off multiple match points and rallied to take the third set, extending the match.

Utah Valley appeared poised to close out the victory in the fourth set, using a 7-0 run to build an 11-2 advantage with Thunstrom serving. Rueckert and Gloeckner each recorded kills during the stretch, while several Long Beach State attack errors fueled the run. Thunstrom capped the surge with a service ace.

The Beach responded late in the set, fighting off three more match points before claiming the fourth set and forcing a decisive fifth.

Long Beach State carried that momentum into the final set, hitting .333 with eight kills and just one attacking error. The Beach raced to a 9-2 lead and never looked back, securing the set and the match.
