Utah Valley Completes Sweep of Cal State Fullerton

OREM, Utah — Utah Valley women's volleyball swept Cal State Fullerton 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon at the UCCU Center.
 
Miley Thunstrom led the Wolverines (5-15, 3-5 Big West) with 13 kills and a season-high 14 digs for her double-double. Brielle Rueckert added 11 kills on 15 attacks and hit .667 for the match. Cal State Fullerton (6-15, 1-7 Big West) was paced by Sophia Shine, who recorded 15 kills.
 
Alyvia Watkins finished with nine total blocks, including two solo blocks. It marked the second time this season she recorded two solo blocks, also accomplishing the feat against Kansas City on Sept. 11. Evalyn Medaris posted her second consecutive double-double with 36 assists and 13 digs.
 
Rueckert and Thunstrom each recorded four kills in the opening set as Utah Valley kept the Titans off balance offensively. After a back-and-forth start, the Wolverines used a 6-1 run to create separation, with Thunstrom putting down three kills during the stretch. Following a Cal State Fullerton block, Utah Valley responded with a Rueckert kill and two Titan attack errors to help claim the set, 25-16.
 
The Wolverines jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set and later extended their advantage with a 5-2 run. Rueckert contributed a kill through the middle, while she and Olivia Gloeckner combined for a block to push the lead to 9-4. Cal State Fullerton chipped away and closed within 18-16, but Utah Valley answered with a block by Medaris and Watkins and continued to rely on its middle attack. Kills from Watkins and Rueckert helped the Wolverines secure the 25-22 set victory.
 
Utah Valley's defense took over in the third set, limiting the Titans to a .062 hitting percentage. A solo block by Watkins gave the Wolverines a 10-5 lead before Cal State Fullerton cut the deficit to 12-10. Each time the Titans threatened, Utah Valley responded. Thunstrom tallied five kills on seven swings in the final frame and later added a service ace to extend the lead to 17-12. The Wolverines closed the match on a 7-2 run, highlighted by kills from Chloe Hansen. A block assist by Medaris and Rueckert sealed the 25-20 set win and completed the sweep.

The sweep is the second this season by Utah Valley, who also swept UC Riverside in the Big West opener on Sept. 24 in Orem.
 
UP NEXT
Utah Valley will face Sacramento State in a home-and-home series next week. The first match is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m. MT in Sacramento. The teams will then travel to Orem for a rematch on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m. MT in Lockhart Arena.
