OREM—Utah Valley women's soccer players Sadie Beardall and Kate Shirts have earned Big West weekly honors, with Beardall named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week and Shirts earning Defensive Player of the Week recognition following a pair of shutout victories over California Baptist and UC Riverside last week.
The duo helped Utah Valley extend its unbeaten streak to eight matches as the Wolverines defeated California Baptist 1-0 on the road Wednesday before returning home for a 3-0 win over UC Riverside on Saturday night. The two victories improved Utah Valley to 9-4-3 overall and 5-0-2 in Big West play, keeping the Wolverines tied atop the conference standings with Cal State Fullerton.
Beardall recorded two goals and an assist for five points during the week, including the game-winning goal in Wednesday's 1-0 road victory at California Baptist. The senior forward found the back of the net in the 30th minute against the Lancers before adding a goal and an assist in Saturday's 3-0 shutout of UC Riverside.
Beardall finished the week with four shots, all on goal, and now leads the Wolverines with eight goals this season, including three game-winners. She ranks second on the team with 19 points on eight goals and three assists.
Shirts anchored a Utah Valley defensive effort that recorded back-to-back shutouts, limiting the two opponents to just eight combined shots and four shots on goal. The Wolverines allowed just five shots, including three on frame, at California Baptist before holding UC Riverside to three shots and only one on goal.
The junior played 162 minutes over the two matches and also contributed offensively, scoring her second goal of the season in the 61st minute of Saturday's 3-0 victory over UC Riverside. Shirts finished a pass from Sam Curtis near the top of the six-yard box following a Utah Valley corner kick.
The two shutouts helped Utah Valley extend its regular-season conference unbeaten streak to 39 matches dating back to Oct. 8, 2022. The Wolverines have now won three consecutive matches and remain unbeaten through their first seven Big West contests.
Utah Valley returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 21, when the Wolverines host Sacramento State at UCCU Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. MT.
