OREM, Utah — Utah Valley freshman midfielder Oliver Watts has been named The Big West Rookie of the Week for the matchweek ending on Oct. 4, the league announced in a press release on Monday.
A native of Frederiksberg, Denmark, Watts picked up a goal contribution in each of the Wolverines' two games last week, the first two of his career. Watts scored the game-winning goal against UC Irvine on Wednesday, taking a feed from fellow Dane Luca Wingaa Laursen, dribbling through space, then ripping a curler past the keeper from about 20 yards out. Watts then had the secondary assist on Brayden Tester's goal at UCSB on Saturday.
Watts is the fourth different Wolverine to win a weekly award from The Big West this season, and the third from Denmark. Wingaa Laursen was named Big West Rookie of the Week back on Sept. 14 after the Wolverines' win at No. 20 Marshall. Toke Amtrup — a native of Svendborg, Denmark — and Nil Grau earned Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week honors on Aug. 31.
Watts and Utah Valley have another busy week of action ahead, traveling to Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday before returning home to Sac State on Saturday. Wednesday's game will kickoff at 8 p.m. MDT, and Saturday's is slated for a 6 p.m. start. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+, and tickets for Saturday's game can be purchased at GoUVU.com/GetTix.
