IRVINE, Calif. — Utah Valley dropped its Big West road opener Friday night, falling 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-22) to UC Irvine at the Bren Events Center. The Wolverines (4-13, 2-3 Big West) were led offensively by freshman Chloe Hansen, who matched a career high with eight kills and added a service ace. UC Irvine (6-10, 4-1 Big West) was paced by Memphis Burnett with 12 kills, while Kendra MacDonald added eight.

Alyvia Watkins recorded five kills and four blocks for Utah Valley, while Evalyn Medaris finished with 26 assists, five blocks and eight digs.

Utah Valley battled back from an early deficit in the opening set, using a 9-1 run to trim the Anteaters' lead to 13-12. Bree Carson, Olivia Gloeckner and Hansen helped spark the surge at the net, with Hansen recording four kills in the frame. The Wolverines capped the run with back-to-back blocks, as Watkins teamed with Medaris and Hansen. UC Irvine answered with a run of its own to build a 17-12 advantage and went on to claim the set.

The Wolverines capitalized on UC Irvine errors early in the second set and took a 6-4 lead behind four Anteater miscues and kills from Medaris and Gloeckner. Gloeckner finished the match with four kills and five digs. UC Irvine responded with a pair of runs, including a 4-0 stretch that gave the home team a 13-10 lead.

Utah Valley continued to apply pressure, cutting the deficit to 15-14 on a block by Medaris and Brielle Rueckert followed by a Rueckert kill. Hansen later added a service ace, but the Anteaters responded and held off a late Wolverine push to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Offense highlighted the third set as Utah Valley posted 13 kills on 35 attacks for a .314 hitting percentage. UC Irvine countered with 19 kills on 37 swings and hit .324 in the set. Miley Thunstrom and Watkins each registered three kills for the Wolverines, while Burnett totaled five and Nicole Feliciano added four for the Anteaters.

Maranda Woolf later recorded a kill to make it 15-11 before Watkins trimmed the deficit to 18-16. Gloeckner's kill brought the Wolverines within 23-20 late in the set, but Utah Valley could get no closer as UC Irvine completed the sweep.
