OREM, Utah — Utah Valley goalkeeper Jackson Medina and midfielder Oliver Watts have been named The Big West's Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week for the final matchweek of the regular season, the league announced in a press release on Monday.
Medina, a junior from Heber City, Utah, made just one save in Saturday's title-clinching victory over Cal State Bakersfield, but it was a stellar one, turning aside a close-range effort to preserve what was a scoreless tie in the sixth minute. Medina later assisted Jose Luis Martin Montealegre on what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 85th minute with a long ball over the top. Medina is the first goalkeeper in program history to have multiple assists in a single season, after also picking up an assist against Pacific.
Watts, a native of Frederiksberg, Denmark, earned his second Rookie of the Week honors after scoring his third goal of the season against CSUB on Saturday, flying in to tap home a cross from Nil Grau. Watts has scored all three of his goals in league play, the most among Big West freshmen and tied for fifth-most overall.
Utah Valley returns home on Saturday to host CSUB in The Big West Championship semifinals. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. MDT, and tickets can be purchased at GoUVU.com/GetTix.
