TUCSON, Ariz. — Two big innings from the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (5-5) proved to be insurmountable as Utah Valley (5-5) fell 11-3 in five innings to close out the weekend at the Bear Down Fiesta.
The Chants rallied for five in the first and four in the fourth to pull away from the Wolverines. Bailey Marvin and Angelique Mann each picked up a pair of base hits and an RBI, while Britney Moreno extended her reached-base streak to nine games with a 1-for-3 game.
After retiring Utah Valley in order to start the game, Coastal put up five runs in a hurry, punctuating the rally with a three-run homer by Hannah Bendle over the batter's eye in center.
The Wolverines responded with a run of their own in the second, but threatened for more. Back-to-back singles by Marvin and Mann along with a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position with no outs, but the only run of the frame came in on a Tatum Hall sac fly.
The Chants tacked two more in the third on a two-run shot by Georgia Hood to center, but the Wolverines were able to match it with two of their own in the fourth on RBI singles by Marvin and Mann.
Coastal put the game on ice with four in the bottom of the fourth to secure the run-rule victory. Utah Valley put two on in the fifth, but couldn't push a run across to extend the game.
The Wolverines will now head to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Rebel Classic at UNLV. Utah Valley's first game will be Thursday against Valpo at 4:30 p.m. MT, with the game being streamed live on the UNLV Rebels YouTube channel.
