ARLINGTON, Texas — Utah Valley women's basketball fell in overtime to UT Arlington, 60-59, on Saturday afternoon at College Park Center.
Cambree Blackham scored 19 points to lead the Wolverines (10-12, 3-8). She has now scored at least 17 points in each game played in Arlington. Laura Bello and Kira Reynolds each scored 17 points for the Lady Mavs (10-13, 4-7).
Amanda Barcello added 11 points, making all nine of her free throw attempts and recording two steals.
Kaylee Headrick posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while
Kylee Mabry contributed five steals to pass Taylor Christensen for second all-time in the career steals list.
Utah Valley opened the game with strong defense, capitalizing on a turnover with a steal by
Gracie Sorenson. Making her first career start, Sorenson scored on a layup assisted by
Halle Nelson and later knocked down a 3-pointer to cap a 7-0 run early in the first quarter. UVU scored eight of its 14 first-quarter points in the paint, including baskets by Headrick and Barcello, before Blackham closed the quarter with a 3-pointer.
Both teams struggled offensively in the second quarter, with UT Arlington building a 19-14 lead before Blackham's 3-pointers pulled the Wolverines closer. Utah Valley forced six turnovers in the period, beginning with a steal by Nelson. Trailing 21-17 with 3:49 remaining in the half,
Saige Gibb scored off a rebound from Headrick to cut the deficit to two. Blackham later drove for a layup to tie the game, and both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the half.
The Wolverines took a 25-21 lead early in the third quarter as Blackham and Barcello each converted two free throws. Utah Valley scored six of its 16 points in the period from the foul line. The lead grew to four after a jumper by Nelson and a layup by Mabry.
Utah Valley pushed its advantage to 11 points, 46-34, with 6:28 remaining in the fourth quarter. Headrick and Mabry each scored three points during the stretch, and Blackham added a 3-pointer. UT Arlington answered by attacking the paint and drawing fouls, going 11-for-16 from the free throw line in the quarter. A 9-0 run by the Lady Mavs tied the game at 49 with 2:05 left. Barcello went 5-for-5 at the line in the final 1:44, including two free throws with 21 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
Utah Valley opened the extra period with strong defense and turned turnovers into points. Headrick completed a three-point play at the 3:44 mark to give the Wolverines a 57-54 lead, and Blackham added a layup to extend the margin to five. UT Arlington closed the gap at the free throw line. Kendal Robinson made two free throws with 1:54 left to give the Lady Mavs a 60-59 lead. Utah Valley had chances in the final minute but could not convert, and UT Arlington held on for the one-point victory.
