Kiplagat, Houle Earn WAC Postseason Honors

3/6/2026 2:58:00 PM

ARLINGTON, Texas — Utah Valley's Sila Kiplagat was named the WAC Indoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year and head coach Scott Houle was named the Men's Coach of the Year as the WAC announced its postseason honors on Friday.

For Houle, it is his 43rd conference coach of the year honor and his 18th since the Wolverines joined the WAC in 2013. Houle helped lead Utah Valley to its first men's indoor title since 2015 last weekend in Spokane, with the Wolverine distance runners carrying the bulk of the load to earn 102 of the team's 197.5 points. This is Houle's first indoor Men's Coach of the Year honor since that 2015 title.

Kiplagat earned his second WAC Freshman of the Year honor after also earning that distinction during the cross country season. Kiplagat made history earlier this season at the Husky Classic, running the first non-converted sub-four-minute mile in program history. Kiplagat later took gold in the mile and earned silver in the 3000-meter at the WAC championships last weekend.

Kiplagat is the second straight Wolverine to win men's Indoor Freshman of the Year after Alex Hartshorn earned the award last season. Kiplagat is also the first male Wolverine and second overall to win both the cross country and indoor track Freshman of the Year awards, joining Hannah Branch, who did it during the 2017-18 season. Kiplagat will look to join Branch as the only Wolverines to win all three Freshman of the Year awards during the outdoor season.

Utah Valley will return to action in two weeks when the Wolverines kick off the outdoor season at the Utah Tech Invitational in St. George on March 20-21.
