OREM, Utah — Utah Valley seniors Nil Grau and Toke Amtrup were named The Big West men's soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for the matchweek ending August 30.
Grau, a forward from Girona, Spain, scored both of the goals for the Wolverines in a pair of 1-0 wins over Central Arkansas and Santa Clara. Grau showed off his creativity on both finishes, burying a spinning half-volley against UCA on Monday, then chipping the keeper from a tough angle just inside the 18 against SCU on Sunday. Entering the week, Grau is tied for the nation lead in game-winning goals with two, and has registered a point in each of the team's first three games this season.
Amtrup, a defender from Svendborg, Denmark, has been an iron man on the back line to start the season, playing every minute and helping hold opposition offenses to a total of three shots on goal. Amtrup was the central cog behind a pair of shutout wins this past week, including Monday's win over UCA where UVU held the Bears without a shot on goal and just one shot overall in the second half.
Grau, Amtrup, and the Wolverines return home on Thursday for their final home game before league play starts at the end of the month. Utah Valley will host the unbeaten Omaha Mavericks, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. MDT. Tickets can be purchased at GoUVU.com/GetTix, and the game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
