Wolverines Fall to Drake Despite Rueckert's Team-High 12 Kills

KANSAS CITY – Utah Valley women's volleyball lost its opening match of the Kansas City Klassic, 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-22), to Drake University on Friday afternoon at the Swinney Center.

UVU (0-7) was led by Brielle Rueckert, who had 12 kills, one shy of her career high she set last season at Weber State. Drake (3-3) had two players reach double digits in kills, led by Caroline Smith with 13 and Lisa Melenciano with 12.

The Bulldogs used a fast start to set the tone early in the first set, hitting .433 in the opening frame behind five kills from Melenciano and building an early lead. Olivia Gloeckner and Rueckert countered for the Wolverines with three kills each in the first. Setter Evalyn Medaris added eight assists to push her over 2,500 assists for her UVU career. She is just the fourth player in program history to reach the mark.

Utah Valley jumped out to an early lead in the second set, building an 11-8 advantage after a strong start by Rueckert and Miley Thunstrom, who added three kills of her own. Alyvia Watkins finished with five kills in the match on 12 attempts and helped give her squad a narrow 16-14 lead in the second. The Bulldogs, however, quickly responded and used a 7-1 run to come back and win the set.

The Wolverines started the third set on a run of their own, taking a 6-1 lead that featured back-to-back blocks from Medaris and Watkins. After a Drake run cut the lead to just two, Utah Valley answered with a run of its own, starting with a kill from Bree Carson. Myka Christensen then recorded a pair of service aces before Chloe Hansen, Carson and Watkins teamed up for a block to extend the lead to 12-7.

Hansen stayed hot and helped push the lead to 16-10 with two kills in the third. Rueckert continued to pace the UVU offense with five kills in the set, including two that helped the Wolverines reach 21 points. Drake, however, had one final push, using a 10-2 run to secure the match.
