Cale Shepherd is entering his second season of coaching at Utah Valley University after a recent two-year stint as Cottonwood High School's head man. Before and during that time Shepherd also spent 10-plus years as a hitting instructor in both California and Utah.
The Orange County, Calif. native returns to UVU after playing his freshman season for the Wolverine baseball team in 1994. From there he played a year at Dixie State where he was named the Region 18 Player of the Year after he hit better than .400. He then moved on to Chapman University in Orange, Calif. and went on to earn two-time MVP, All-Region and All-American accolades. Shepherd still holds several single season records at Chapman and during his time there he also helped lead them to the Div. III World Series.
After his collegiate career Shepherd played two years (1997-98) of professional baseball for the Elmira Pioneers in Elmira, N.Y. While playing for Elmira he was named the Northeast League's Utility Player of the Year and also helped guide his squad to a League Championship. That winter he also played a season of winter ball for the LA Dodgers in Ecuador where he pitched in and won the Championship game.
Shepherd now resides in Salt Lake City and still plays in competitive fastpitch softball leagues. He is the father of a beautiful 11-year-old daughter Kalena (11), who also plays and excels in softball.
