Nate Miller enters his first season as a volunteer assistant on Coach Hubbard's staff in 2019. Miller will primarily handle the program's performance training and strength & conditioning at UVU.
Miller comes to Utah Valley after a trio of recent stops at Utah State (2016-18), Boise State (2014-16) and Dixie State (2012-14).
“We are excited to announce the addition of Nate Miller to our staff. His knowledge and expertise as a Division I coach and men’s fastpitch player, as well as his background in strength & conditioning make him a perfect fit for our program,” said Hubbard. “We are thrilled to have Nate here and looking forward to officially opening our fall season this weekend.”
Over the past two seasons in Logan, Miller oversaw the Aggie infield and assisted with the team’s hitting coaching responsibilities. He helped USU compile a 51-52 overall record during his two years, which included a 33-18 overall mark in 2017 as well as a 14-9 Mountain West Conference record that year.
Under Miller’s direction, the USU infield posted a .964 fielding percentage in 2017 and a .938 mark in 2018. Utah State also and tallied 2,015 total putouts over the two seasons. At the plate, the Aggies batted .309 in 2017, one point shy of tying the school record. He also helped a pair of Aggies earn All-Mountain West honors, as Victoria Saucedo and Brina Buttacavoli were both tabbed second team All-Mountain West athletes during his time in Logan.
Before coming to Utah State, Miller spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Mountain West rival Boise State. In his time with the Broncos, Miller coached four players to All-Mountain West accolades, including the 2016 Freshman of the Year, Rebekah Cervantes. Cervantes also went on to be named to the All-Pacific Region Third Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Prior to coaching at Boise State, Miller was at Dixie State, where he spent three seasons as an assistant coach. During his three seasons in St. George, the Trailblazers went 129-37, shared two PacWest titles and made three NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. In 2014, Dixie State ended the year in a third-place finish at the Division II Women's College World Series.
At Dixie State, Miller served primarily as the program's hitting and infield coach. Under his tutelage, the Trailblazer offense finished second among all Division II teams with a .365 team batting average in 2014. The team ranked in the top 10 nationally in three additional offensive categories, ranking eighth in on-base percentage (.426) and doubles per game (1.90), while ranking 10th in scoring (6.97 rpg). Defensively, Dixie State set a program record with 32 double plays, an average of 0.52 per game, good for eighth nationally. That season, Miller coached two infielders to collect NFCA All-America Second-Team honors in 2014, while an outfielder earned a spot on the Daktronics All-America Second Team.
Miller played baseball at Irvine Valley College (Calif.) after prepping at Northridge High School in Layton, Utah. He then served an LDS Church mission to Des Moines, Iowa, returning to begin his coaching career. Miller began his coaching career at the prep level, serving as an assistant baseball coach at Clearfield (Utah) High School and Syracuse (Utah) High School from 2008-10. He then served as head coach of the Adidas Futures Team from New Jersey in 2011 before joining the Dixie State staff.
Miller graduated from Dixie State in 2014 with a degree in communications. He is currently pursuing a master's degree from Concordia. Miller is married to Brittnie Whipple Miller, who pitched for Dixie State from 2008-11. They have two sons, Tatem and Swayze.
