OREM, Utah - A balanced Utah Valley State attack helped the Wolverines to a straight set win, 30-13, 30-13, 30-15, over visiting Westminster College.
Setter Aulani Rogers distributed the ball evenly, allowing nine different players to record kills. Rogers collected 21 assists on the night as the Wolverines hit an impressive .420 clip.
"Aulani [Rogers] controls the offense," said head coach
Sam Atoa.
Roger's control was evident as she allowed for a different Wolverine to lead UVSC in kills in each of the three sets.
In game one, southpaw
Deise Borghetti pounded out 5 kills and hit .667. Six other Wolverines tallied kills in the set, including back row specialist,
Deja Lunt.
Lacee Koelliker helped Rogers circulate the ball by chipping in all seven of her assists in the first set.
Rogers served eight straight points to start the second set.
Kassidy Brotherson led the game two assault with 5 kills, while hitting .833.
The Griffins finally scored to make it 8-1. They played even with UVSC through the middle part of the set, but were pushed back by a 22-12 Wolverine run helped by Krystal Peterson's four kills.
In the final set, the Griffins showed glimpses of hope by taking a modest 4-2 lead. The Wolverines quickly rebounded on another kill by Brotherson. She led UVSC with a match high 10 kills.
"Kassidy [Brotherson], day in and day out continues to lead our team in kills," said Atoa.
The Wolverines ended the third set and closed out the match with a 14-5 run.
UVSC's next match is on the road to take on the University of Northern Colorado. The two first year Division I teams battled earlier this month in Orem.
