PROVO, UTAH - Kassidy Brotherson's 14 kills and impressive .591 hitting percentage was not enough for the Utah Valley State (2-7) volleyball team in its first ever Division I match versus Brigham Young University (8-3) Friday night.
The Wolverines were swept by the Cougars in three games (30-18, 30-26, 30-24) in front of 2,086 fans at the Smith Fieldhouse.
The Wolverines had spurts of hope in both the second and third games, but BYU's front line was just too much. The Cougars dominated the net with 10.5 total team blocks to UVSC's one and out-hit the Wolverines .422 to .196.
"They hit very well, they blocked very well, and they dominated the game," said UVSC coach, Sam Atoa. "BYU was too much for us to get anything going."
BYU was paced by Kimberly Wilson with 16 kills and a .538 hitting clip. The Cougar's Carrie Bowers helped the team numbers by tallying a career high .643 hitting percentage to go along with nine kills.
Even though it was a frustrating night for the Wolverines Atoa thought his team would grow from the experience.
"I am grateful to Karen (Lamb) for giving us the opportunity to play here and help our program as we start into Division I play. I was proud of how we battled and continued to fight back. This could be a very healthy rivalry. Next time we will have a better showing."
The Wolverines will be on the road next Friday night to take on The University of Montana-Western.
