SALT LAKE CITY - The nations No.18 ranked team was too much for Utah Valley State Friday night as the Missouri Tigers swept UVSC in three straight games, 30-23, 30-24, 30-16, during play in the Hampton Inn Classic.
Lisa Boyd, 12 kills, and Shen Danru, 10 kills, led the Tiger attack.
"That was a very good team we played. It was a different level. They controlled the match with their excellent passing," said UVSC coach
Sam Atoa following the loss.
While Missouri did pass the ball well, the Wolverines still managed some solid blocking. UVSC finished with 10 blocks to Missouri's eight. UVSC's blocking helped limit the Tigers to a .148 hitting percentage for the match.
Utah Valley (1-4) hit .010 in part because of Missouri's play, and in part because of its own struggles passing. UVSC's generosity also extended to serves. The Wolverines committed six service errors and allowed 12 service aces.
In each of the first two games UVSC played the Tigers even through half of the game. Before the Tigers pulled away.
"We would play half a game then do some 'not so good things' that put us in holes we couldn't get out of," said Atoa.
Kassidy Brotherson and
Jenny Weed had six kills apiece to lead the Wolverines. Brotherson hit a team-high .211. Boyd hit .348 to lead Missouri. UVSC concludes play in the tourney with a 12 p.m. match against host team University of Utah, and a 5 p.m. first serve versus Washington State.
