SALT LAKE CITY -
Kassidy Brotherson had 16 kills and 10 blocks to lead Utah Valley State past Washington State 30-26, 23-30, 30-32, 30-16, 15-11 and earn a split in its final two games of the Hampton Inn Classic on the campus of the University of Utah. UVSC lost to Utah in its first match of the day 30-19, 30-20, 30-21.
Tied 1-1, UVSC lost the critical game three of the Washington State match 32-30 to fall behind two games to one. But the Wolverines were undaunted and outscored WSU 10-1 to open the fourth game in route to their 30-16 win to force a deciding game five.
With momentum on its side, UVSC broke open a close game to win 15-11 and take the match.
UVSC's Alina Walluer added 14 kills and 19 digs to go with Brotherson's match-high 16 kills.
In the Utah loss, UVSC was out-hit by the Utes .276 to -.028.
UVSC's next match is Weber State University on Tuesday. The match starts at 7 p.m.
