Weber Holds Off Utah Valley in Five

OGDEN, Utah- The last time the Utah Valley State volleyball team dropped its first two games they rallied to beat Texas-Pan American on Saturday. Three days later, the Wolverines were in the same situation at Weber State, only this time the outcome didn't go in their favor.

The Wildcats beat Utah Valley 30-22, 30-20, 30-32, 29-31 and 15-10. The loss drops the Wolverines to 8-9.

"I definitely didn't expect us to come out flat," Wolverine coach Sam Atoa said. "I thought we learned something from our last match. Now it is too late to look at what we could have done and should have done. I wish they would have been more competitive from the beginning."

Deise Borghetti led the Wolverines with 23 kills and 21 digs. Jessica Endres also had a solid night with 14 kills. Despite the solid performances, nothing could go right for the Wolverines in the first two games.

In game one, Weber State scored nine straight points and turned a slim 12-11 lead into a 20-11 margin. Utah Valley cut the lead to 26-21 and 27-22 thanks to kills by Borghetti. But the Wildcats sealed the win by scoring the final three points of the game.

Weber Stated jumped out to an 8-3 lead in game two and led by as many as 13 points later in game.

The Wolverines trailed 27-23 in game 3 but then rallied to score four straight points to tie the game at 27-27 thanks to kills by Borghetti, Krystal Taylor and Lacee Koelliker. Weber State had game point twice at 29-28 and 30-29 but a Borghetti kill and a Wildcat service error tied the game at 30-30. Malia Hoyt gave the Wolverines a 31-30 lead and Weber State had a hitting error to give Utah Valley State the win.

Trailing 26-20 in game 4, Utah Valley rallied to tie the game at 27-27. Weber State then had game point at 29-27 and 29-28 but hitting errors by the Wildcats and a block by Hoyt gave the Wolverines the win.

"They had a great effort in turning things around," Atoa said. "It was great to see the efforts after being down. It was neat to see them perform that way. We just couldn't sustain it."

Weber State dominated the final game by jumping out to a 10-3 lead. Utah Valley cut the deficit to 12-9 but that was the closest the Wolverines got.

The Wolverines return to the court next Tuesday for a home match against BYU at 7 p.m.
