Scrappy Wolverines Lose to BYU in Four

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley State pushed Brigham Young University to four games, but couldn't force a fifth and deciding game losing to the Cougars, 29-31, 30-25, 23-30, 26-30, on Tuesday night at the Activity Center.

Deise Borghetti and Alina Wallauer led the Wolverine charge offensively, and kept UVSC in the match. Borghetti finished with 16 kills, and 9 digs, while Wallauer notched 15 kills, and 12 digs tallying her eighth double-double of the season.

Lacee Koelliker tallied her team-high 11 th double-double of the season recording 42 assists and 10 digs. She also had two block solos. Libero, Maegan Hoyt played solid defensively with a match-high 18 digs.

"What I wanted was for the girls to come out with fire, we did that," said head coach Sam Atoa. "They are a very good team and a very big team. Our fire kept us going, we just couldn't sustain it in the end."

The Wolverine "fire" showed in game one, fighting the Cougars to the end in a 31-29 loss. The Cougars didn't take more than a three-point lead throughout the game, and a BYU service error allowed the Wolverines to tie the game 29-29. But a Utah Valley hitting error and BYU block sealed the victory.

In game two, the Wolverines changed the momentum of the match and took an early 9-5 lead. The UVSC push energized the home crowd and the Wolverines went on a 6-1 run, sustained by Wallauer and Borghetti kills and a Jessica Endres ace, to extend their lead to 15-6. The Cougars would battle back to within three points at 24-21, but UVSC held on, hitting .278 in the game.

"We were the aggressors in the second game," said Atoa. "Getting the lead early really helped us."

In game three, the Cougars took the momentum back forcing the Wolverines to hit .054 in the set, while they countered with a .333 hitting clip.

Game four was much the same, although the Wolverines just wouldn't let the Cougars run away. BYU extended lead to seven points, but UVSC scraped its way back into the game at 29-26. The Wolverines weren't able to maintain a final charge losing by four.

Atoa was pleased with his team's effort, and was encouraged with the play of his middle blockers.

"I thought our middles were really aggressive," said Atoa. "I was proud of Stephanie [McFarland] and Jessica [Endres]."

Endres finished with 8 kills to go along with to block solos. McFarland notched 4 kills on the night.

The Wolverines falls to 8-10 on the year, while BYU improves to 12-9. UVSC will get back on the court Wednesday night as it hosts Northern Colorado at 7:00 p.m. in the Activity Center. All students and employees are admitted free with their UVSC I.D.
