OREM, Utah -Â Utah Valley State forced a fifth and deciding game, but ran out of energy in the end, losing a hard fought match to Northern Colorado 30-20, 27-30, 30-22, 30-23, 15-8, Wednesday at the Activity Center. Maegan Hoyt recorded a single match school record for digs with 33 on the night.
Hoyt was all over the court defensively. She surpassed the digs record by two digs going into the fifth game, and for good measure notched 5 more digs in the deciding set.
Alina Wallauer had another big night, tallying her ninth double-double of the year with 19 kills, and 17 digs. Lacee Koelliker finished the night with her team leading 12th double-double and was just two kills away from a triple-double. She finished with 59 assists, and 13 digs.
Three other Wolverines notched double figure numbers in kills. Deise Borghetti had 16, Jessica Endres had 12, and Krystal Taylor finished with 10.
"It's always tough to lose the fifth game, especially when you play so well in the fourth game and have all the momentum,"Â said Atoa.
Momentum changed throughout the match as the team that took the early lead in each game came away with the victory. The Bear's 4-0 run in the middle of game five gave them a 9-5 lead and they never looked back.
In game one, UNC went on a 12-3 run and took a commanding 16-6 lead. It looked like it might be a quick match until the Wolverines came back with some fire of their own in game two. The fire was ignited by Borghetti, who pounded out 11 of her 16 kills in the second set leading UVSC to a 30-27 win.
Game three was all UNC. The Bears took an early 8-3 lead and didn't let up winning by eight points.
Instead of laying down, the Wolverines were the aggressors in game four. Sparked by Endres and Wallauer who had 6 kills each in the game.
The deciding game was neck and neck for the first 10 points with each team recording 5, but a UNC 4-0 run was the difference. The Wolverines did get back within three points at 10-7, but they just scored one point the rest of the way.
"Some of the things we did in the fourth game we were not able to continue in the fifth,"Â said Atoa. "We just got out played in the end, they were too aggressive to make a come back."
The Wolverines fall to 8-11 on the season. They will be back on the court on Thursday, November 4, to host Boise State in the Activity Center. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (MST).
