Wolverines Split on First Day of Independent Championship

OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley State volleyball team came back strong after a loss earlier in the day to South Dakota State, to beat Texas-Pan American in four games, 30-23, 30-22, 30-32, 30-22 on the first day of the 2004 Independent Championship.

The Wolverines had four players with double figure kills in the win over the Broncs. They were Deise Borghetti with 16, Jessica Endres with 15, Larissa Laycock with 12, and Krystal Taylor with 10. Lacee Koelliker spread the ball around evenly and finished the match with 58 assists, one off her season high.

In their first match on Thursday the Wolverines lost to SDSU in three games, 31-33, 21-30, 28-30. Wallauer led the Wolverines with 16 kills and eight digs. Endres and Borghetti each had 11 kills.

Utah Valley played the Jack Rabbits closely in game 1. The two teams were tied at 30-30 before SDSU pulled away at the end.

In game 2, South Dakota jumped out to a 19-13 and 23-15 lead. The Wolverines cut the deficit to five twice at 25-20 and 26-21, but South Dakota scored the final four points to win the game.

Utah Valley State jumped out to an early 12-11 lead in game 3. The Wolverines later extended its lead to 18-15 after a Wallauer kill.

The Jack Rabbits rallied to tie the game at 18 and later led 27-25. The Wolverines tied the game at 28 on two Borghetti kills. But South Dakota scored the final two points for the win.

Kim Bostrom led South Dakota State with 15 kills and Kristina Martin had 11.

UVSC (10-13) will come back on Friday to take on North Dakota State at 12:30 p.m. (MST), and then the Wolverines will play IPFW in the final match of the day at 7:00 p.m. (MST). All matches are played in the McKay Center.
