Family Ties:
Utah Valley State wrestling coach Cody Sanderson is the brother of Olympic Champion Cael Sanderson. Cael is an assistant coach with Iowa State. The two will coach against one another for the first time in Saturday night's match-up.
Cody was a two-time All-American and two-time runner-up at the NCAA Championships when he wrestled at Iowa State. He also served as an assistant at Iowa State prior to becoming head coach here at Utah Valley.
2004-05 Season Preview:
The following is an in-depth look at each weight class for the 2004-2005 Utah Valley State wrestling team.
125: Talon Vickers, a transfer from Missouri Valley College and a state champion from Idaho, will likely take the starting spot at this weight class. Chase Frost of Mountain View will be redshirting while he recovers from surgery.
133: Last year's standout, Erkin Tadzhimetov is redshirting this year. Matt Ripplinger of Box Elder High School and Michael Robbins of Lehi High School have positioned themselves to challenge for the spot. Ripplinger wrestled for Ricks College before transferring to UVSC, while Robbins is a true freshman.
141: Justin Rawle will be returning from last season to defend his spot at 141 lbs. He will have some solid competition from Clayton Wolf, who has dropped a weight class from last season.
149: UVSC's Team Captain, Mitch Morgan, will be starting again at this weight class. He began his NCAA wrestling career at Boise State, but he now leads the Wolverines in its wrestling battles.
157: Tanner Cowan has decided to drop from the weight class he owned last season because he felt he would be more competitive at 157. He was a three-time State Champion for Juab High School.
165: Wayne Watts and Mark Blain will compete for the starting spot at this weight class. Watts returns from last year's squad. He originally transferred from The Citadel, where he was an NCAA Tournament qualifier. Blaine is new to the team this year, and is a 2-time state champion from Pleasant Grove High School and a member of the Cadet World Freestyle Team. Another wrestler who is showing a great deal of potential is Mark South from Mountain View High School. However, he will probably be redshirting.
174: Darin Harris had his season cut short last season by an injury. He should be a strong competitor for the Wolverines this season.
184: Last season Ivan Bigney made a habit of saving dual meets for the Wolverines. He likes the pressure of having the match on the line. He will be a strong spot for the team.
197: Darren Cooper was possibly the biggest surprise of last season's squad. He began the season a little slow, but finished in a dominating fashion. He seems to be picking up right where he left off.
HWT: UVSC has been looking for a new "big-man" to replace Billy Green, who is serving an LDS Mission. Cory Bastian and Erik Baker return from last season and will be competing for the spot. However, Brent Dugan Whitman, a true freshman from West High School, could mix things up a little.
Up Next:
The Wolverines will travel to Las Vegas on December 3-4 for the Las Vegas Invitational. There last match before the new year will be December 19 th in Reno at the Reno Tournament of Champions. All students and employees can attend home games free with their UVSC I.D.
