OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley women's basketball team fell to 1-7 on the season on Saturday night, losing an in-state battle to Southern Utah 78-69.
Kaydee Allred was the standout for the Wolverines with 22 points, a new career high. Courtney Lynn also established a new career high with 10 points. Kelci Naihe and Rebekah Fales both chipped in 10 as well.
The Wolverines turned the ball over less and out-rebounded SUU, but the shooting percentage was the difference. Utah Valley State shot only 37 percent from the field, while the T-Birds hit 43 percent of their shots.
Utah Valley State looked good early. An Allred lay-up followed by three pointers by Jessica Scabby and Naihe, and the Wolverines led 8-0. But Southern Utah slowly chipped away and took their first lead with 4:35 remaining in the first half on a Katy Baker bucket. From then on, the Wolverines were forced to play catch-up.
"We're not a team that's figured out how to get over that hump when we're coming from behind," said Utah Valley State coach Cathy Nixon.
Beal lead Southern Utah with 21 points, including 12-12 from the free throw line. Cassie Warburton added 16 for the T-Birds.
The Wolverines will now have two weeks off for some much needed rest before taking on Boise State at home on the 18th.
"With the travel that we've had, from Montana to Idaho to Spokane to Alaska...it's been a great learning experience," said Nixon. "We need to get back to the drawing board. Obviously a little rest and recovery will be good for us."
The game on the 18th will be part of a double-header. Following the Boise State game, the Utah Valley State men's team will take on Cleveland State at 7:00pm.
