POCATELLO, Idaho - The Utah Valley State women's basketball team struggled from the opening tip Tuesday night in Pocatello, as they fell to a tough Idaho State team, 86-46.
Former Utah Valley State star Camile Michaelson was well prepared for the Wolverines. Michaelson scored a career high 27 for the Bengals, hitting 8-11 from the field including 6-8 from beyond the arc.
Michaelson, whose maiden name is Christensen, was a junior college star for Cathy Nixon at Utah Valley State before the Wolverines made the switch to Division I.
The Idaho State defense set the tone in the first half when the Bengals built a big lead. It wasn't until Rebekah Fales hit a jumper with 13:33 to go in the half that Utah Valley got on the board. At that point Utah Valley State only trailed 6-2.
The teams traded buckets for the next few minutes when, with the score 12-8 in favor of ISU, the Bengals went on a 10-0 run sparked by four points from Natalie Doma.
That run turned into a 21-2 run to end the half, thanks to hot shooting from ISU which shot 50% from the field as a team in the first half. Katie Wilson and Fales both scored four in the half to lead the Wolverines in scoring. Michaelson led the Bengals with 13 at the break.
The Wolverines played a much better second half, but Idaho State was on fire from the outside and coasted to the victory.
For the game the Bengals shot 57% from the field including 12-25 from three-point land.
Freshman Jasmin Fantl, hit 3 three pointers and scored nine points in front of her mother who traveled all the way from Germany to spend the holidays with her daughter. She led Utah Valley State in scoring. Another freshman, Meredith Wilson chipped in four points off the bench as Coach Nixon finished the game with five rookies on the floor.
For Idaho State, Michaelson's 27 led the way while Natalie Doma chipped in 23.
Up next for the Wolverines is a rematch against Montana State in Orem. Utah Valley State lost to the Bobcats on November 30, 74-65. Game time is 7:05pm. All students and faculty get in free with UVSC ID.
