OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley State wrestling team struggled Friday night, losing 27-12 to Northern Colorado. Four Wolverine wrestlers posted wins against the Bears including
Tanner Cowan. Cowan fought a close battle with Mikell Surber, coming from behind late to win 11-8.
"He found a way to win which shows his character," said coach Cody Sanderson.Â
Mark Blain also picked up a win, 13-8 over Caleb Van Vorst.
"It was great for him to get back," said Sanderson. "He got injured at the first of the season...so it's just great to see him get out there and get a chance to wrestle."
In the final two matches of the dual, Talon Vickers defeated Blayze Bahe 6-3 and Matt Ripplinger topped Mark Hastings after falling behind 7-0 to win 8-7. Vickers win over Bahe was revenge for a heated match in Las Vegas.
"It was a scrappy match, in fact they got into a little bit of a scuffle," Sanderson said of the match in Las Vegas. "He (Vickers) has got more in him. He's going to get better and better."
But for the most part Sanderson wasn't happy with his team's effort.
"We had a talk, they know how I felt about it. I got a group of tough guys out there...they'll bounce back."
Up next the Wolverines will travel to Tempe for the Sun Devil Duals against Arizona State, Cal State Bakersfield and Embry Riddle. That dual will take place on Monday. Then on Thursday the 13th, they'll be back home for a match against Portland State at 7:00pm.
