News & Notes:
Regular season action gets underway this week as the Wolverines will host Jacksonville State on Friday night at the McKay Center at 7:05pm. It will be the season opener for both schools. The all-time record between the two schools is even at one game apiece.
Last season Utah Valley State beat the Gamecocks at the North Star Invitational in Fairbanks, Alaska 67-43.
Miriam Palkki had 18 points to lead the Wolverines in the Thanksgiving weekend invitational and was named to the All Tournament Team.
Then in February, JSU returned the favor by beating the Wolverines 78-67 in Jacksonville, Alabama. In that game, five Gamecocks scored in double figures to off-set 19 points by Rebekah Fales
Last Time Out :
Robyn Fairbanks scored 17 points and pulled down 16 rebounds in just 22 minutes of play and five Wolverines scored in double figures as Utah Valley State topped Mesa State 85-69 in the final exhibition game. Fairbanks averaged 13 points and 11.5 rebounds during the preseason for the Wolverines and head coach
Cathy Nixon knows that she got a gem in the 6-1 Canadian.
"Obviously I'm excited about a player like her," said Nixon. "She competes every single day. She's learning to do things every day that will add to her effectiveness as a player. I just think that's just a glimpse of what we're going to get from her in the future."
After a tight first half in which both teams struggled from the field, Utah Valley shot 54% in the 2nd half to pull away. Veva Whitear scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half while Sandy Marvin scored all nine of her points in the second half.
Rebekah Fales added 14 points and five rebounds for the Wolverines,
Miriam Palkki scored 12 points and
Hollie Beaman netted 11 points as Utah Valley's depth was too much for the Mavericks.
"Any given night we have kids that can put up numbers and I think we'll be more balanced and more potent offensively than we have in the past," said Nixon. "These kids just have a will to compete and a will to win that I think will start to separate us and elevate the level of our program."
