Wolverines Scratch Out Win Against Westminster

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley State held off a pesky Westminster team to pick up a 65-60 win on Tuesday night and even its record at 2-2 on the season. Miriam Palkki led the team with 15 points while Sandy Marvin scored 13 for UV. Shalee Fackrell had a double double for the Griffins, with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

"Sometimes you just grind it out and win ugly. And that's exactly what tonight was," said Utah Valley State coach Cathy Nixon. "It wasn't a pretty game, but sometimes you've gotta figure out how to get it done and I was proud of the kids for battling through that way."

Westminster's three-point shooting kept them in the game throughout, as they hit 10-21 from beyond the arc compared to just 11-37 on two-point field goal attempts.

"I thought Westminster played well," said Nixon. "They hit shots and executed really well, so there's nothing to take away from them."

Neither team could really manage a big run to take control of the game until late in the second half when Utah Valley State stretched a two-point lead up to seven and eventually stretched that up to 12, at 60-48 with just under four minutes to go.

The Griffins added a couple of late three's to cut the lead to five, but Veva Whitear's free throws with :19 seconds left made it a three possession game at 65-58 before Westminster added a bucket with under a second to go.

Marvin's 13 points gives her four straight double figure scoring games to open her career. She leads the team with a 14.6 ppg average. Robyn Fairbanks scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds while Susie Cornejo scored eight points on 4-6 shooting.

The Wolverines will now head to Boise State for a matchup with the Broncos Thursday at 7:00pm. Live audio and live stats for that game can be found by going to BroncoSports.com. Boise State beat Utah Valley State last season in Orem, 90-63. UV will be back in the McKay Center on Saturday afternoon against Oregon State at 4:30pm.
