Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Vandals' Hot Shooting Night Dooms Wolverines

OREM, Utah - Despite a career high from freshman Robyn Fairbanks, Utah Valley State women's basketball lost to Idaho, 99-70, at the McKay Center.

"Robyn had a very nice game for us tonight," Utah Valley head coach Cathy Nixon said.  "She competed against tough defense and is consistent and steady."

Unfortunately for the Wolverines, Fairbanks was one of the only bright spots.

"We were not defending the way we should have and Idaho shot well tonight," Nixon said.

Idaho got excellent performances out of guard Leilani Mitchell and Emily Faurholt, who scored 30 and 21, respectively.  Mitchell shot an amazing 7-for-8 behind the three-point line. The Wolverines fall to 2-5 with the loss while the Vandals improve their record to 3-4.

The two teams traded baskets in the early going with Utah Valley State holding on to an early 8-7 lead four minutes into the game. Fairbanks led the way with six early points, hitting her first three shots from the field. Idaho started nailing threes, going on a 25-8 run to open a double-digit lead that it wouldn't relinquish.

The Wolverines didn't have an early answer to the Vandals' hot shooting. Idaho hit eight of its first 11 treys after entering the game shooting just 27 percent from the three-point line. Overall, the Vandals shot 60 percent from the field in the first half and 62.5 percent behind the three-point arch.  Mitchell put a fitting end to the first half by nailing a forty-foot shot at the buzzer, giving Idaho a 56-35 halftime lead and giving her 20 points.

Utah Valley shot well from floor in the first half as well, posting a 48.3 percent mark. Fairbanks scored 17 first-half points on 8-for 10 shooting. Idaho started the second half much like it ended the first, scoring the first seven points of the frame.

Utah Valley State fought back, playing the Vandals evenly for much of the second half. Fairbanks led the Wolverines with 23 points on 10-for-13 shooting, and five assists while Hollie Beaman led the team with 6 rebounds.

Up next the Wolverines will hit the road for their first in state contest of the year at Utah State on Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm.
