Watts Shines in Final Home Match

OREM, Utah - Wayne Watts made his final home match at Utah Valley State a memorable one. On Saturday, against Wyoming, the Wolverine senior pinned Clint Stout 1:50 into the first round by using a move called the cement mixer.

"I don't think Wayne could have had a better finish," Utah Valley coach Cody Sanderson said. "He's been practicing that thing all week. I could tell this might be a guy he could get it on. I could see he was ready. He got a chance to jump in the air. That's what he wanted."

Despite Watts' performance, the Wolverine wrestlers still fell to Wyoming 33-15 at the Activity Center. The loss dropped the Wolverines to 3-10-1.

The Wolverines were forced to forfeit two matches at the 133 and 165 weight class and Brandon Meise (149) wrestled despite having pneumonia for the last week.

"It has just been a case of bad luck," Sanderson said referring to his teams' injuries. "It's been frustrating. This has been a year of almosts. We haven't quite clicked but it is coming and the guys are staying positive."

Along with Watts, Tanner Cowan won a 2-1 decision over Kyle Dye in the 157-weight class. The only other Wolverine winner was Diego Avalon (197).

The most exciting match of the day was the 125 match with Utah Valley's Talon Vickers and Wyoming's Bryce Leonhardt. Leonhardt defeated Vickers 4-3 in three-overtimes.

"I don't think it will be long before Talon is a ranked wrestler if he keeps improving" Sanderson said. Saturday's match was also the final home match for Darren Cooper."

Utah Valley closes out its season on Feb. 18 in the Northern Colorado Duals. They will wrestle Northern Colorado and North Dakota State.
