Las Cruces, New Mexico -?? The Utah Valley State softball team lost two close games to New Mexico State and Purdue on Friday and Saturday in the Hilton Las Cruces Classic. Utah Valley lost 4-1 to Purdue on Saturday and 4-0 to New Mexico State on Friday.

-??We battled hard and did some good things,-?? Utah Valley coach Todd Fairbourne said. -??At some point I hope the girls are rewarded for their effort with some wins.-??

Outside of BYU, Fairbourne said Purdue was the best team they have faced this season. The Big 10 school didn-??t intimidate the Wolverines. They led 1-0 through four innings.

Rachel Hartgrove led off the inning with a double off the wall. Three batters later Amanda Kendzior singled home Hartgrove for the Wolverines run.

Utah Valley pitcher Jackie Roberts scattered seven hits in four and 2/3 innings. Chelsey Mikalauski allowed only one hit in the final two innings.

Purdue scored its four runs in the fourth and fifth inning.
-??Hopefully we can continue to hang with these teams,-?? Fairbourne said. -??This was a game I feel like we should have won. In my opinion Purdue is probably the best team here.-??

On Friday, the Wolverines lost 4-0 in five innings to New Mexico State. New Mexico State scored three of its runs in the first inning.

The game was originally scheduled to start at 7 p.m. but instead it did not get underway until after 9:30 p.m. ??The game did not end until just after mid-night. The game had to be stopped three times due to the weather.

Utah Valley is back in action on Sunday at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. They face Texas-Arlington, Kansas and UMKC.
