OREM, Utah - Utah Valley State freshman center Robyn Fairbanks did it all Tuesday night as the Wolverines fought off Texas-Pan American 73-67 to move to 7-10 on the season. Fairbanks scored a career high 32 points on 12-of-17 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds, five blocks and three steals in 30 minutes of action.
"It's amazing...in some ways she's subtle. I mean I look at the stat sheet and she's got 32 points. She's just so steady," said Utah Valley State coach Cathy Nixon.
Despite coming out on top, Texas-Pan American didn't make things easy for the Wolverines.
On the strength of 21 points by Fairbanks, Utah Valley used 13-4 and 12-4 runs in the first half to build a 42-29 lead at the break, but slowly saw that advantage shrink midway through the second half.
The Broncs slowly crept back and with Fairbanks on the bench saddled with four fouls used a 9-0 run on three straight 3-pointers to turn a seven point deficit into a two point lead at 56-54 with 7:05 to go.
That's when Fairbanks worked her magic, with eight points, three rebounds, two steals and a block over the next 3:53 to help Utah Valley to a 67-60 lead and its fifth win in the last seven games.
"Pan American just kept coming at us and we kept finding ways to answer it," said Nixon. "We got stops down on the defensive end when they made their run. We clamped down defensively and found a way to get it done."
Sandy Marvin and Miriam Palkki chipped in 10 points apiece for the Wolverines, while Pan American had four players in double figures led by Teshay Winfrey's 15 points.
Freshman Hollie Beaman had a strong night at point guard for UV, chipping in eight points while matching a career high with nine assists for the Wolverines.
"I can't say enough about she's handling herself and just composing herself as a freshman," said Nixon. "I think it's phenomenal that she's able to run a team that well."
The duo of Beaman-to-Fairbanks is becoming more formidable with each passing game and both players couldn't say enough about what the other has done for their respective games.
"She's awesome," said Fairbanks of Beaman. "She makes everything so much easier. She can see everything and can find me anywhere."
"She's my favorite. She'll catch any pass I throw," said Beaman of Fairbanks. "She just has such soft hands."
The win over Pan American is the first of seven games against fellow Divison-I Independents for the Wolverines. Utah Valley will play the Broncs in Edinberg, Texas on March 4th in its final game of the season.
