Golden, Colo. - Utah Valley State got its season underway posting a 2-2 record at the Jack Hancock Dual Invitational.
The Wolverines lost their first two duals in their pool before winning their final two in the consolation pool. UV lost, 49-0, to tournament champion, Oregon State in its first match of the day.
Justin Rawle and Dustin Olsen were the two most competitive wrestlers for the Wolverines against the Beavers. Rawle lost, 3-0, while Olsen dropped a 5-2 decision.
"Oregon State is a very strong team," head coach Greg Williams said. "They have a lot of talent. They are especially strong in the weights that are our strengths."
It the Wolverines second dual, they fell 30-12 to James Madison. Rawle picked up the first victory for Utah Valley when he beat JMU's Nick Broccoli, 5-2. Marc Fenwick also scored for the Wolverines when he pinned Ivan Langares.
"Justin [Rawle] wrestled very well for us today," Williams said. "He controlled all of his matches. He wrestled well against Oregon State as well but lost a close one."
Utah Valley defeated both of its opponents in the consolation pool. The Wolverines beat Mesa State 26-12 before defeating Newman (Kan.) 33-14. UV only lost two matches in which the Wolverines competed in their final two duals.
Rawle finished the day strong for the Wolverines, pinning Mesa State's Kirk Piatt (2:55) and beating Newman's Rowdy Palmer, 18-0. Eric McAllister also dominated his final two matches, picking up a 16-3 win over Keenan Jennings of Mesa State and pinning Newman's Florian Temengil (2:27).
Utah Valley continues its season Nov. 19 when it competes at the Northern Colorado Open.
