Kansas City, MO- The Utah Valley State men's basketball team plays at the UMKC of the Mid-Continent Conference on Tuesday at 6 p.m. (MST). The game can be heard live on 1400 KSTAR.
This is the third meeting between the two schools. Each team has won once on their home court with the Wolverines winning 63-61 last year at the McKay Center. UMKC knocked off Utah Valley 84-77 two years ago in Kansas City.
UMKC is 3-5 and coming off a 71-61 loss at Arkansas on Saturday. The Kangaroos are led by the play of Quinton Day's 20.9 points a game. He is also shooting 48 percent from the field. Three other players are scoring in double figures for UMKC. Brent Stephens is netting 12.5 points and grabbing a team best 4.6 rebounds and Dominique Johnson and Dan Brumagin are each scoring 10.3 points an outing.
"Quinton Day is one of the premier guards in the country," Utah Valley State coach Dick Hunsaker said. "He is off to a terrific start this year. He is a real difficult match up. UMKC has been shooting the ball really well."
As a team the Kangaroos are scoring 73.1 points a game and shooting 45 percent from the field. They are 2-0 at home with wins over Florida Atlantic and Baker. They also beat Marshall on a neutral court.
Utah Valley is 4-3 and coming off a tough 71-69 road loss at Portland State on Saturday. Ryan Toolson scored 24 points in the game and David Heck added 17.
Toolson leads the Wolverines in scoring at 14.1 points a game while Heck upped his average to 13.1 points. Heck also leads the team in rebounding at 5.7 boards a game.
Following Tuesday's game, the Wolverines return home to host in-state foe Utah State on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the McKay Center. All students and employees get in free with ID.
