Santa Clara Box Score : Washington Box Score: Season Stats

Seattle, WA -?? The Utah Valley State softball team beat Santa Clara 4-1 and lost 8-0 to No. 15 Washington in six innings in the first day of the Husky Fever Classic. Utah Valley is now 5-4 and will play Santa Clara and Washington again Sunday afternoon.

-??We did a lot of good things today,-?? Utah Valley State coach Todd Fairbourne said.

In the opening game against Santa Clara the Wolverines jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the second inning. With two outs, Natalie Paulsen doubled to right-center and Kaeleigh Forsyth followed with a single up the middle that scored Paulsen from second.

Chris Jimenez then followed with another single up the middle, scoring Forsyth to make the score 2-0.

-??We were efficient in our hitting today,-?? Fairbourne said. -??Jimenez really hit the ball well today and Forsyth had a good game on both sides of the ball.-??

Utah Valley extended its lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning thanks to two errors by the Santa Clara defense.

Emily Zupan opened the inning by reaching base on an error by the Santa Clara shortstop. Paulsen was then hit by a pitch with one out to put runners on first and second. The runners then advanced a base after Forsyth grounded out to the pitcher. Lindsey Phelps, who was pinch running for Zupan, and Paulsen then scored when a Jimenez hit to the second baseman turned into an error.

Santa Clara scored its run in the fifth inning. For the game the Wolverines had four hits, two coming from Jimenez and the two coming from Paulsen and Forsyth.

Jackie Roberts earned her fourth win of the season. She struck out two batters, scattered seven hits and walked only one battler in seven innings of action.

-??This was a good win,-?? Fairbourne said.

The Wolverines hung with Washington for the first four innings, trailing 2-0. But Washington then scored five runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to earn the 8-0 win.
